Ratings: ‘Modern Family’ Surges to Win, But ‘Idol’ Gives Fox the Night

ABC's "How to Live With Your Parents" gets off to a solid start

ABC's "Modern Family" surged in the ratings Wednesday night to score the night's top individual performance, and the network's new "How to Live With Your Parents" got off to a strong start with its series premiere.

But Fox won the night overall thanks to "American Idol," according to preliminary numbers.

Fox, which ran "Idol" throughout primetime, was first in the key 18-49 demographic with a 3.0 rating/9 share and in total viewers with 11.5 million total viewers. That represents a 3 percent dip in the demo from last week, continuing a string of Wednesday declines for the singing competition.

CBS took second place in ratings and total viewers with a 2.4/7 and 9.9 million. "Survivor" at 8 p.m. dipped 4 percent to a 2.4/7 and took 9.1 million total viewers, while "Criminal Minds" the following hour ticked down 7 percent to a 2.8/7 and drew 10.7 million total viewers. "C.S.I." at 10 dropped 9 percent for a 2.1/6 with 9.8 million total viewers.

ABC was third in ratings and total viewers with a 2.3/7 and 7.2 million. "The Middle" at 8  climbed 11 percent for a 2.0/6 and had 7.2 million total viewers. "Suburgatory," premiering in its new 8:30 timeslot, inched down from last week's 9:30 airing for a 1.8/5 and took 5.8 million total viewers. "Modern Family" at 9 jumped 28 percent from last week to draw the night's best ratings with a 4.1/11 and took 10.6 million total viewers.

The series premiere of "How to Live With Your Parents" at 9:30 drew even with last April's premiere of "Don't Trust the B—- in Apt. 23" in the time period, posting a 2.9/7 and taking 8.6 million total viewers."Nashville" at 10 climbed 13 percent to a 1.7/5 and took 5.6 million total viewers.

Univision took fourth place in ratings and fifth in total viewers with a 1.7/5 and 3.9 million.

NBC was fifth in ratings and fourth in total viewers with a 1.5/4 and 6.1 million. "Dateline" premiered in its new 8 p.m. time period with a 27 percent boost over its last original in late March, taking a 1.4/4 with 5.9 million total viewers. Following a "Law & Order: SVU" repeat, "Chicago Fire" at 10 posted a 1.6/4 with 6.3 million total viewers.
