Ratings: ‘Modern Family’ Tops ‘X Factor’ As Fox Wins Night; ‘Suburgatory’ Strong

But NBC’s “Free Agents” hits a dangerous low

ABC's powerhouse "Modern Family" again topped Fox's "X Factor" and helped "Suburgatory" premiere strong Wednesday, but Fox won the night overall, according to preliminary numbers. NBC's struggling "Free Agents," meanwhile, hit a dangerous new ratings low.

"Modern Family" at 9 p.m. had a 5.6 rating/14 share in the revered 18-49 demogarphic and 13.2 million viewers. It followed the new "Suburgatory" at 8:30, which premiered to a 3.3/9 and 9.8 million. "Suburgatory" was gifted a timeslot between "The Middle" and "Modern Family," and thrived in it by building on its lead in: At 8, "The Middle had a 2.6/8 and 8.6 million total viewers. "Happy Endings" at 9:30 had a 3.2/8 and 7.4 million. "Revenge," which had the highest-rated premiere of any new drama when it aired last week, slipped 18 percent in its second outing to a 2.7/7 and 8.6 million total viewers.

ABC and CBS tied for the second-highest rated network behind Fox, which was powered by consistent ratings for "X Factor." The series scored a 4.1/11 and 11.9 total viewers from 8-10. It premiered last week to a 4.4, and received a 4.3 on its second night.

On CBS, "Survivor: South Pacific" at 8 scored a 3.1/9 and 10.5 million total viewers. At 9, "Criminal Minds" had a 3.6/9 and 12.6 million. "CSI" at 10 had a 3.0/8 and 11.6 million.

NBC, meanwhile, is having mixed success in its attempts to establish a Wednesday night comedy block. "Up All Night" at 8 was flat with last week, earning a 2.1/6 and 5.3 million total viewers. But "Free Agents" slipped 23 percent Wednesday from its second-week ratings, to a 1.0/3 and 3.1 million total viewers. At 9, "Harry's Law" was flat with a 1.2/3 and 7.4 million total viewers. "Law & Order: SVU" at 10 had a 2.0/5 — down 17 percent — and 7.1 million.

The CW's "H8R" at 8 had a .6/2 and 1.4 million total viewers — the most viewers the show has ever had. At 9, "America's Next Top Model" had a .8/2 and 1.7 million total viewers.
