Ratings: Tiger Woods Loses, NBC Wins at U.S. Open

Tiger and friends won the night and a pair of new shows premiered on ABC.

It's hard to imagine why anyone enjoys watching golf, but the sport is still able to bring in TV audiences. Sunday night's fast national ratings numbers are in and NBC won the evening with the U.S. Open golf tournament final.

FORE! Tiger Woods lost out to Irish golfer Graeme McDowell at the U.S. Open in Pebble Beach, but the tournament was a win for NBC. Golf got the peacock an average 2.3 rating/8 share in the key adults 18-49 demographic, winning every time slot from 7 p.m. until the conclusion of the tournament at 9:30 p.m. This year's broadcast of the Open was up 35% from last year. Perhaps all the attention from Tiger Woods off-course behavior is bringing more eyeballs to the PGA Tour. NBC won the night with a 1.8/6 average.

A PAIR OF PREMIERES Two new shows aired on ABC last night. "The Gates," a show about vampires living in a suburban gated community landed a 1.5/4 making it the highest-rated summer debut of a scripted series since NBC premiered "The Philanthropist" in June 2009. "The Gates" also won the 10-11 p.m. hour and was ABC's best scripted summer debut since the Roman mini-series "Empire in 2005. ABC's other new series, unconventional crime family comedy "The Scoundrels," scored a 1.3/4.

OUT WITH THE NEW Second place went to FOX last night– thanks to their repeats. New episodes of the comedies "'Til Death" and "Sons of Tucson" performed dismally averaging 0.6/3 from 7-8 p.m. The network was saved by an 8-10 p.m. block of their animated shows; "The Simpsions," "The Cleveland Show," and "American Dad." FOX's cartoons got a 1.7/5 average.
