RealD Announces Deal to Equip 100 3D Screens in China

The deal brings the company's total commitment to 2,000 screens across the country

RealD is partnering with Chinese entertainment company SMI Corporation Limited to outfit 100 screens across China with its patented 3D technology.

Installation have already begun, the companies said Thursday. The technology will be deployed in the Stellar chain of theaters, which currently operates more than 40 locations in roughly 20 provinces and cities in China.

China's massive population makes it a tantalizing target for movie companies looking to capitalize on growing international box office receipts. IMAX, Dolby and other companies that offer premium movie-going experiences have been busily expanding into the country in recent years.

“This partnership with RealD will combine the world's most cutting-edge 3D cinema technology with our five-star multiplexes, bringing Chinese audiences a brand new movie-going experience," Bruce Ren, president of SMI International Cinemas Limited, said in a statement.

The deal means RealD now has commitments to equip 2,000 3D-screens in China.
