Renters Make It ‘Date Night’ for 4th Straight Week

“Why Did I Get Married Too?” is the week’s best-selling disc

DVD renters continued to want to make it a “Date Night.” The Tina Fey/Steve Carell comedy maintained its perch as the most rented DVD for the fourth straight week, according to Rentrak.

Tyler Perry fans preferred to buy rather than rent the latest addition to the filmmaker’s strong women and the men who fail them canon, “Why Did I Get Married Too?” The drama was the bestselling disc last week, while “Date Night” had to settle for seventh place on the sales chart. However, Perry’s dominance did not extend to the rental side; “Married” only packed enough punch to grab sixth place.

Also released this week, poorly reviewed family movie “Marmaduke” took advantage of the dearth of competition in the kiddie genre to slide into the number two spot on the sale’s chart. Based on a long running comic strip, the talking dog film was the fourth most rented disc last week.

With the fall television season kicking off in the next few weeks, DVDs of several hit shows made their presence felt on the sales chart. “Sons of Anarchy: Season 2,” “House: Season 6” and “The Vampire Diaries: Season 1” captured third, sixth and ninth place respectively.

The final season of “Lost” fell from the top of the sales charts this week, but still moved enough boxed sets to be the fifth best-selling disc in its second week of release.

Next week brings the release of summer bomb “Killers” and Michael Douglas’ well reviewed indie film “Solitary Man.”
