Paul W.S. Anderson to Battle Mt. Vesuvius in ‘Pompeii’

The “Resident Evil” mastermind has signed on to direct the Summit-distributed movie about a notorious volcano’s eruption in the year 79 AD

"Resident Evil" Director Paul W.S. Anderson is taking on Mount Vesuvius.

Anderson, who wrote, produced and directed the 2002 "Resident Evil, and also penned wrote all three sequels — will direct "Pompeii," about the catastrophic eruption of the volcano in the year 79 AD, TheWrap has confirmed.

Although the movie is about the destruction of the Roman city, it's also a love story about a slave who wants to marry his master's boss.

Constantin Film is financing. Summit Entertainment is handling U.S. distribution. Summit International will be selling the movie at Cannes.

The movie is set to shoot in spring of 2012. Lee Batchler and Janet Scott Batchler are writing.

Anderson's "The Three Musketeers" is now in post-production. That movie also is for Constantin and Summit.

Anderson is repped by ICM.
