Robert De Niro Developing Madoff Movie for HBO

“Taxi Driver” star developing movie about the infamous swindler

Robert De Niro is about to show his evil side. And no, he's not reprising the role of ultra-intimidating father-in-law Jack Byrnes in yet another "Fockers" movie. (At least, as far as we know, he isn't.)

The "Taxi Driver" actor is currently developing a biopic with HBO about Ponzi scheme perpetrator Bernie Madoff, who defrauded thousands of investors out of an estimated $18 billion.

The film, which will be produced by De Niro and his Tribeca Productions partner Jane Rosenthal, will be based on Diane Henrique's new book "The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust." Should the project go into production, it's expected that De Niro will star as the mega-stakes con man.

The actor, who will co-star in "The Killer Elite" and "New Year's Eve" in coming months, is apparently developing a taste for portraying real-life baddies; he's rumored to be starring in the upcoming Lee Daniels-directed historical drama "Selma," as segregationist Alabama governor George Wallace.
