Robert Downey Jr. to Voice Lead in ‘Peabody & Sherman’ Film

DreamWorks Animation has tapped Rob Minkoff to direct the 3D live-action/animation hybrid

Move over 'Bill & Ted,' because Peabody and Sherman are taking over time travel and leaving your special phone booth back in 1989.

Oscar-nominated actor Robert Downey Jr. will voice the genius dog known as Mr. Peabody in DreamWorks Animation's "Peabody and Sherman," an individual familiar with the project has confirmed to TheWrap.

Created in the late 1950s/early-60s as characters on the "Rocky and Bullwinkle Show," Peabody and his pet boy, Sherman, were famous for using a computerized device called 'The WABAC Machine' to travel through time and discover improbable things about historical figures.

Rob Minkoff ("Stuart Little") will direct the movie, which aims to re-introduce the cartoon characters to a new generation of animation fans by 2014.

The team of Jeffrey Ventimilia and Joshua Sternin ("Yogi Bear") will write the screenplay, and while it remains a mystery as to which historical figures Peabody and Sherman will meet, the movie will serve as the duo's origin story.

The studio considered doing the project as a live-action/animation hybrid, but ultimately decided to make it fully computer animated, in 3D, of course.

DreamWorks Animation artists are already conceptualizing designs for Mr. Peabody using Downey's image, though the role of Sherman hasn't been cast yet.

Downey Jr. is represented by CAA and his involvement in the DWA project was first reported by Entertainment Weekly.
