Open Road Films is releasing Robert Rodriguez's sequel to the bloody 2010 hit

Open Road Films will release “Machete Kills,” Robert Rodriguez's sequel to his bloody 2010 hit, on Sept. 13, the independent distributor announced on Tuesday.

The film, which returns Danny Trejo as the eponymous hero and former Federale. This time around, the president  of the United States recruits Machete to take down a revolutionary and an arms dealer hellbent on global destruction.

Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba will be reprising their roles, while Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Lady Gaga, Charlie Sheen and others have joined the cast.

The film, the second in a planned trilogy, opens a week after another action-heavy spectacle — "Riddick," the latest in the Vin Diesel-led franchise.

-The first "Machete" grossed $44 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, giving Rodriguez free rein to indulge in more of these comically graphic films.
