Hey six stringers, the developers of “Rock Band 3” say the YouTube leak of the upcoming music videogame’s setlist is “misinformation.”
Two days after the unknowing efforts of an earnest Harmonix employee scrolling through a demo of the game was caught on camera and promptly posted on YouTube, Harmonix shot back first via Twitter and then on video.
Harmonix’s John Drake and project director Daniel Sussman posted a two-minute clip early Friday morning from Gamescon in Germany telling fans of the highly anticipated third version in the multi-player multi-instrument music videogame franchise, due out Oct 26, that the leaked setlist wasn’t the real “Rock Band” deal. In their official comment, with several songs actually scrolling behind them, the “Rock Band 3” creative team stressed to gamers “unless you hear it on rockband.com, you should know, it’s not confirmed news.”
Proclaiming that they are “communications professionals who would never make a mistake and leak 83 songs,” Drake tells fans on the hurried video not to trust websites with “bad information” who are “just trying to get money from advertisers.”
Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s quick-response damage control but in the still economically hard-hit videogame industry, there is no doubt its big bucks for all concerned.
After a double digit drop in sales in the past year in the genre, Harmonix and publisher MTV Games are trying to breathe new life and audiences into their franchise, and any leak could seriously blunt that effort, especially if fans don’t like the new tunes.
Regardless, on the tech and play upward curve, “Rock Band 3” is going to incorporate some aspects of the “Beatles: Rock Band” game, like three-part harmonies and keyboards. It is also known “Rock Band 3” will feature not just the standard guitar, bass, drums and vocals modes, but a Pro mode and a music library function that lets players carry songs and games from other “Rock Band” games, like "Beatles" and “Green Day: Rock Band,” onto the new release. What has been more of a state secret, beyond an official list of 38 songs, is what the setlist of “Rock Band 3” would be…until now.
Is the setlist for real or just wild hopes by keen eyed keeners? The initial YouTube post has been taken down but here is what some are saying is the new “Rock Band 3” setlist.
