Days after Mitt Romney’s secretly taped fundraiser speech went viral, the GOP presidential candidate averaged 2.8 million viewers during his Wednesday night “Meet the Candidate” interview on Univision, the Spanish-language network announced on Friday.
President Obama, whose identically structured Univision interview aired Thursday night, pulled in slightly lower with 2.7 million viewers.
Romney, who caught flack for saying in the leaked video he’d fare better with Hispanic American voters if he had “Mexican parents,” averaged an audience of 1.4 million viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, and 1.3 million between 25 and 54 during the one-hour broadcast.
Obama’s audience included 1.3 million viewers between 18 and 49, and 1.4 million in the 25 to 54 range.
Univision billed the hour-long programs, hosted by the network’s Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, as opportunities for both candidates to speak out on issues pertinent to Hispanic Americans.
