Sam Shepard Movie Rides to Magnolia Pictures

The studio acquires North American rights to the actor's Western "Blackthorn"

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to "Blackthorn," a western starring Sam Shepard that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last week.

Shepard plays Butch Cassidy in the movie, which will have its market debut next month in Cannes.

The movie, about Cassidy's final days, also stars Stephen Rea, Eduardo Noriega and Nicolaj Coster-Waldau.

In "Blackthorn," Butch Cassidy has survived a standoff with the Bolivian military and is quietly living under the name James Blackthorn in a Bolivian village. As he ages, he decides to return to the U.S. to see his family one more time — but he is forced into one last adventure after encountering an ambitious young criminal.

The movie is director Mateo Gil's English language debut.

Miguel Barros wrote the screenplay. Ibon Cormenzana and Andres Santana produced.

Magnolia plans a theatrical release later this year.
