Sam Waterston Signs on for Aaron Sorkin’s HBO Pilot

Longtime “Law & Order” mainstay moves from the courts to cable news

Sam Waterston has left the New York legal system and ventured into more treacherous waters — the world of cable news.

Waterston, who's played prosecutor Jack McCoy for the past 17 years on the recently canceled "Law & Order," has signed on for Aaron Sorkin's upcoming HBO pilot, "More as This Story Develops," the cable outlet has confirmed to TheWrap.

Waterston will play Charles Skinner, the president of a cable news division.

The series will revolve around a cable-news program, with "Dumb and Dumber" actor Jeff Daniels in the lead. The pilot will also star Olivia Munn as a financial analyst, with Greg Mottola ("Paul," "Arrested Development") directing.
