Scarlett Johansson Questions Her Existence in ‘Ghost in the Shell’ International Trailer (Video)

Adaptation of popular manga series will premiere in theaters on March 31

The new “Ghost in the Shell” international trailer sees Scarlett Johansson questioning the nature of how she became a cyborg.

Johansson stars as The Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

The film adaption of the iconic anime series of the same name, directed by Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”), came under fire last year for the casting of Johansson as the Major, whose name in the anime movie and TV series is Motoko Kusanagi. The furor was about Asian characters being whitewashed with white actors, a common phenomenon in Hollywood and considered to be particularly egregious with “Ghost in the Shell” because the anime is so beloved.

“Ghost in the Shell” will debut in theaters on March 31.
