Seth Green Disses Ben Affleck as Batman: Henry Cavill's Superman Will Not Be Scared of Him (Video)

“Dads” star tells Larry King the famed writer-director lacks “gravitas”

Seth Green is not a fan of Ben Affleck‘s casting as Batman in the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel.

“Modern mainstream is accepting of interpretations of these characters with more gravitas, you know. We're past the time of Adam West's kind of goofy interpretation of Batman,” Green said on Ora TV's “Larry King Now.”

See video: Ben Affleck Addresses Batman Casting Backlash on ‘Jimmy Fallon’ Show: ‘I Handle S*%t’ (Video)

The noted comic book nerd told host Larry King that he was a big fan of Michael Keaton, who played the first film iteration of the Caped Crusader in Tim Burton's “Batman” (1989) and “Batman Returns” (1992).

“You gotta remember that at the core of that character, Batman's a crazy person. Batman has no powers. Batman is a rich, screwed up kid whose parents were killed in front of him.”

Green agreed with King that Christian Bale, who wrapped up his turn as the character in Christopher Nolan's “Dark Knight” trilogy in 2012, was “great” for the role.

But when it comes to Affleck, whose experience with playing heroes has been less than super, Green doesn't think the Academy Award winning quadruple-threat has what it takes to stand up against Henry Cavill's Superman in the upcoming sequel to “Man of Steel.”

“If this movie is meant to be the idealistic alien, humans before all else Superman, and this is supposed to be the grizzled weathered Batman who's been living in Gotham, fighting crime himself for 10 years, you need a guy who's older, you need a guy who's got more weight, you need a guy that a Henry Cavill Superman is gonna be actually scared of,” Green said.

King pointed out that perhaps the “Dads” star needn't be so literal with his interpretation of Affleck's chops.

See video: Stan Lee Won't Cameo in Marvel's ‘Guardians of the Galaxy'; Doesn't Blame Ben Affleck for ‘Daredevil’ (Video)

“Affleck is a very good actor, and you're supposed to act,” King said.

“Yes, but, there is only so much that you can act a role before people are or are not going to believe you in that role,” Green responded.

“I'm never going to play, um, you know, an MMA fighter, because I'd step into the ring with an actual MMA fighter like Batista and I wouldn't look correct.”

Has Superman EVER won a fight without his super powers? He gets some kryptonite dangled in front of him and he can't even take a punch from an out of shape, middle aged Lex Luther.

      Batman in 3.

      • guest1

Superman can't change the fact that he was born with his powers. He also can't help that kryptonite is his weakness. So it does not matter that he gets weak and hurt when contact is made with the stuff. It is in his very cells. This still does not make Batman a better fighter.

        • H4BAF

God I hate myself for having an argument about what non living, fictional super hero would win in an imaginary fight, but that doesn't mean you're right.

Guys without super powers win fights all the time. Show me real life guys built like Superman and Lex, with the same age difference to boot, and the “superman” guy wins every time. (All things being equal)

And actually, the mere fact we're having this silly debate means Batman is most definitely a better fighter than Superman.

          Otherwise there'd be no argument.

          • Mase

I totally agree. Superman relies way too much on his super powers. In the fighting skills area, he's pretty poor.

Yes, an old Batman is imposing. He's at his most imposing when at that weary, grizzled age. He was a force of nature in The Dark Knight Returns which is what is being used as a reference for how they're going to approach. Superman is going to bleed.

Batman will be 40 and retired for seven years in the new Man of Steel sequel, according to the latest rumours.

Moviepilot claims to have the inside scoop of the Caped Crusader and what he’ll get up to in the upcoming Batman v Superman film.

The site reports that Batman, played by Ben Affleck, will be older and wiser – we’ll meet him aged 40 and he’ll have been retired for seven years with the events of The Dark Knight Rises having happened in the past.

Batman will have retired so that he can rebuild Gotham as Bruce Wayne with Robin becoming his first protege as NightWing.Ben Affleck has been cast as the Caped Crusader (Picture: Getty Images)

The site revealed: ‘During this time, knowing that crime needs to be dealt with, BatFleck constituted the BatFamily: NightWing, BatWing, BatGirl, RedRobin and Robin.

‘The latter died at the hand of The Joker who escaped during the TDKR’s event but then reappeared.

‘As a way of getting BatFleck’s attention, the Joker devised a plan to attack one of his proteges.

‘He targeted the youngest and less experienced one – Robin. He killed him and BatFleck has been blaming himself day and night for it, this sets up a Batman: Under The Red Hood solo movie.’

Wayne has also built an army of Batman androids and drones while he is forced to work with LexCorp to reconstruct Metropolis.

Batman v Superman is out on May 6, 2016

        • Logic

Pearl Harbor is actually a great movie if you watch it through the lens of a 1940s melodrama. All of the actors are playing their roles like they stepped out of that time period. It's all intentional, and they hit it out of the park. It's one of the great underappreciated (that's an understatement) gems, ever. I'm glad that I have this perspective on it. It's something that I like to think is mine and mine alone. I love Pearl Harbor. Thank you Michael Bay. You're a true patriot. Keep up the swell work. Tell the rest of these maroons to kiss your arse and keep on trekking.

        • jason

I agree with you on that, justin timberlake made it unwatchable for me..

      • Dre Day

You're right, Ben is not Batman. He's a capable ACTOR playing a comic book character in a movie. If Batman is written well, has an awesome suit and car, and some cool gadgets, many decent actors can thrive in the role, including Mr. Affleck.

    • etherspin

thing is though, that implies nobody but an actor with a similar number of awards or better can critique a performance by an actor. Seth is free to add his take and who knows how big his opinion of himself is? Seth pretty much detailed some reasons why he thinks Ben lacks the superficial characteristics to be *able* to bring gravitas to the role.
I disagree and think Ben will be good but am nonetheless interested to hear Seths take

People are entitled to their opinion whenever they want to have it. Awards aren't the determining factor in whether someone would be good for a particular role. Seth Green was speaking specifically about the role of Batman vs a Henry Cavill Superman. He said nothing about Ben's acting capability overall.

The only thing I would've liked to have hear was who Seth would've chosen as an example of someone having “gravitas” to go toe-to-toe with an Henry Cavill Superman.

          • LeVar

I think we should remember what the question was, “Why do people have a problem…” Not why does Seth Green have a problem…And lets face is Afleck does not carry the gravitas of a hardened serious actor, despite having done really good serious hardened roles. When people think Afleck, they see a walking bobble head more likely to play a version of Adam West Batman. Some people cant get past that.

          • Christopher Burgos

You're not even making a valid argument.

Seth Green didn't say he would make a better Batman than Affleck.

He's stating his opinion. If you form your opinions by awards someone has received, then that's your choice but doubtful you do.

Affleck's movies are awful and his career tanked because of it. You're just cherry picking, leaving out the series of stinkers, and misrepresenting which makes your position doubly suspect. He didn't win the Oscar for Argo. It won Best Picture. He was specifically excluded as Best Director. The Oscars are a sham either way. That movie was unwatchable except for Alan Arkin. It won for its feel-good American theme. His award for Good Will was for writing and shared on a movie from 15 years ago.

Whatever. You sound like his agent.

      • Dre Day

You left off one small-tiny thing from Ben Affleck's resume. The most successful movie studio in the world, handed him the keys to their Batman cinematic franchise after Christopher Nolan revived it. You and all of the other haters will be on board, once the teaser trailer comes out. Why hate on people more talented and successful than you?

      • Logic

It won Best Picture because of the skill of the director. It wouldn't exist without him, so yes Affleck won the Oscar. Let's not forget to mention the countless other awards he did win for Best Director, Picture, Actor, etc for Argo. He has two Oscars on his shelf, and multiple nominations and trophies from around the world for multiple movies. The man is more than adequate for the role. Forget the old Affleck. This new Affleck is going to prove everyone wrong. He has to at this point, and I can't wait to collect all the money I'm going to win on bets and the crow I'm going to serve to people like you. Pathetic slob, you.

    • That's just silly

When you say ‘won the oscar’ did he win for his acting? No one is saying he can't direct/produce/write; those are what he's best at but he's not an amazing actor & I think that's what fans of comic book movies crave at the end of the day. They don't care how famous he is, just that he can nail the role. Can you honestly say from the roles he's played in the past that he's an amazing actor? Has the roles he's played ever been applauded as amazing? I love both Marvel & DC, but Marvel goes for the quality actors over how famous they are. They needed a big draw name for this movie & he was it & now that they have the draw card they've emptied the budget & have the ‘sticking to a strict budget’ Gal Gadot & ‘get that kid who played the Facebook guy – everyone uses Facebook!’ Jesse Eisenberg.

Seth is not saying that Affleck is a poor actor, he is criticising the choice of casting. In the same way you wouldn't cast Robert De Niro as say, Spiderman or The Flash etc. [I'm aware I'm mixing universes] Although De Niro is fantastic actor, he just wouldn't fit the role.

  • Dre Day

Can somebody please have Seth's nerd membership card revoked. Dude is clueless. To all the people that want a dark, badass, edgy, Batman with gravitas in this upcoming movie. Affleck and Snyder are huge fans of Frank Miller. Take a wild guess, of what version of Batman they're going for! If Affleck was incapable of pulling that off, he wouldn't have the role! Plus he's much bigger than Bale and Cavill.

      I'm with you on this.

    • David

I've met him and Affleck is a huge dude, he doesn't look it on screen but he's both tall and muscular, I'll give him benefit of the doubt playing the dark knight.

      • http://www.facebook.com/gerard.kennelly Gerard Kennelly

        you mean,,
you're actually gonna wait till you SEE the film !!!!!!!!!!!

      • Logic

It doesn't matter. He's getting the same fitness training as Cavill. He's going to be huge.

    • Sean Linnihan

I agree with you, but keep in mind, the original script sucked so much ass that Snyder isn't in charge anymore.

      • Dre Day

The original script sucked? How do YOU know that? Did you read it? Oh, just another negative assumption. Zack Snyder's ALWAYS in charge of his movies unlike some other directors. It's HIS take on these iconic characters. That's what we'll see in the upcoming movie.

        • Sean Linnihan

No, you won't. He's not writing anymore. Geoff Johns is in his seat.

          • Dre Day

Huh? Geoff Johns is working on the Flash TV pilot. Not sure why you would bring him up. I think this Batman/Superman film will be just like The Avengers, only with better characters, a better plot, and better special effects. May 2016, CAN'T WAIT!

    • http://www.facebook.com/gerard.kennelly Gerard Kennelly

this is not affleck replacing bale
      this is a MARVEL film
      mmmmaarrrvveeellllll
      avengers not chris nolan

      • Dre Day

SKREW MARVEL! DC comic book movies to start world domination in 2016!

  • Zara Tubman

Does Seth Green think that a Henry Cavill is a good choice to play the flying hero then? I can see his point, but Ben Will probably beef up a lot for the role. And he could be great for the role we will just have to wait and see. The only thing I am not happy with is Gal Gadot playing Wonder Woman. Gemma Arterton would be a better choice. And Christian Bale was great as Batman, but maybe he did not want to do the role again. We will just have to wait and see.

    • Logic

Bale couldn't play the role again given TDKR. He's out, plus he'd only do it if Nolan were directing. This was always meant as a total reboot of Batman, so he was never in contention for it, anyway.

  • Bruce

Seth's ideal Batman was Mr. Mom and Beetle Juice before being cast as the Caped Crusader. Is that the type of Gravitas Affleck is lacking?

    • Hawkman

Haha, I see what you're saying, however, those were all actually good movies and not really related to how Michael played Batman. It seemed like he was generally accepted as a “good” Batman from what I remember even though he did have roles that weren't exactly superheroish, or superheroy, well, you know what I mean, ha.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gerard.kennelly Gerard Kennelly

‘desperate measures’ was the only film where keaton looked like a convincing batman

  • Hawkman

I actually thought the general public had reluctantly accepted Ben as the next Batman with a collective, “Whatever', but now their castings for Wonder Woman and Lex Luther seem to be even worse IMO.

  • David

Safe to say that Superman would never be afraid of Batman, no matter who plays him

    • http://www.facebook.com/gerard.kennelly Gerard Kennelly

if day lewis, deniro and brando had pulled a dr parnassis
and all 3 of them played the part
superman would still kill bruce wayne/ batman with his bare hand

    • Logic

Sure he would. The Dark Knight Returns proved that, and that's the tonal basis for what they're going for with this movie. Superman will be afraid and bleed.

  • Terri Watford-Hagan

Actually I kinda agree with him. When I think of Ben, I see him as some1 playin a more comedy role. I was thinkin Matthew McConaughey would be better. Picture him in tha Batman mask and dressed as Bruce Wayne. He's played in more serious roles. But tha vote is in….Ben it is.

    • http://www.facebook.com/gerard.kennelly Gerard Kennelly

      yeah
i loved his last comedy ARGO

Christian Bale was asking for too much money.

  • Benjamin Roussey

Bale's voice was too deep as well. Strange.

If you want to create jobs you need to make this a business friendly
environment. How do you do this? You curtail Sarbanes Oxley, the EPA,
Dodd/Frank, lower taxes, and cut out other job killing regulations. If you want
businesses to create jobs, this is what you do. Why do think you businesses are
going to hire in America when you are attacking them every day? Obama is assailing
the private sector every day, Obama does not understand profits and he does not
understand how businesses work. This is why 15 million black people are
unemployed and they deserve to be because they continue to vote for tax and
    spend liberals.

many people died, mainly Africans ; USS Cole attack in 2000 – Clinton did
nothing about any of this accept fire tomahawks from 800 miles out (that is all
he would ever do) – several sailors dead. Al Queda was emboldened because of
Clinton’s weak responses – this led to 9-11 and Bush hammered them unlike Al
        Gore would have ever done.

    Bill
Clinton said this economy could not be fixed in 4 years giving Obama a pass.
Wrong. A liberal could not fix it in 2 centuries, I could fix it 2 days or 2
    weeks, give or take.

To get this country back at 3-5% growth rate and 5% unemployment rate, it is
    real simple. We need to:

    1.
    Cut
taxes, possibly move to a flat tax (18%) or a more simpler tax code

    2.
    Reform
    and gut the IRS

    3.
    Dump
    Sarbanes Oxley

    4.
    Dump
    Dodd/Frank bill

    5.
    Dump
Obamacare (allow for more competition and pass a tort reform bill)

    6.
    Reform
    health care

    7.
    Reform
social security (increase age in states and stop at age 72) and bolster social
security (make sure it is not about to run out of money)

    8.
    Undermine
the EPA which is just killing jobs and economic activity

    9.
    Undermine
the Dept. of Energy and Interior (new leadership)

    10.
    Drill
off shore, open more lands for non-wasted use, become energy efficient

    11.
    Pass
    the Keystone pipeline bill

    Miscellaneous:

    12.
    Build
the wall along our Southern Border

    13.
    Confront
Iran and Russia over Iranian nuclear sites (take out Iran’s leadership)

    14.
    Get
almost all of our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan (help Afghanistan develop
that tritium deposit and keep hundreds of drones flying over Afghanistan and
    Iraq too)

    15.
    Get
troops out of Germany and Italy and everywhere else they do not need them to be
and have them live and train on American soil

    16.
    Make
South Korea to pay us to keep our troops there

    17.
    Make
Japan pay us to keep our troops there (or ask China to pay us to keep our
troops there) ; Bolster position in Hawaii

    18.
    Lower
all federal wages across the board, cut benefits and pensions for all federal
    employees

You people are morons. Judge after the movie is all I keep hearing. Daredevil is pretty damn similar to barman and that was an embarrassment to mankind. And yes the movie all together sucked. That includes Affleck. Now, after bombing with a less known character that he forever ruined in cinema, he's going to try again with a much more prominent actor? DC is going to continue to bomb movies until they get with the program and stop hiring all these corn ball directors who think they're shit don't stink rather then hire a comic writer like whedon as support. Whedon is why the avengers worked. Whedon is why marvel is killing it now. The batman movies were good, but man of steel, a movie about the most popular super hero of all time, with the second most recognized symbol around the world, did about as good as Thor dark world? Yea, for the expectations of a superman movie, that's bombing it big time.

  • Logic

After seeing Brolin in Oldboy and Gangster Squad, I'm no longer in the pro-Brolin/Batman camp. He's been sucking lately in some really awful dreck.

  • TC

Mr. Ex-Jennifer Lopez (one of many exes of hers) will NOT be a good Batman.

  • Cirric Fylenco

A guy like Batman is going to be prepared, he is going to have some kryptonite in his utility belt. I got to go with Batman.

  • BaltimoreJack

But Seth, you aren't a “good” actor, so we wouldn't believe you in an MMA role in the first place. You're also about 5'1”…so there's that.

  • Benjamin Roussey

Affleck was pretty good in The Town and Good Will Hunting. I am still trying to figure out why Superman would be afraid of any human unless they had kryptonite anyhow.

  • Tim Drake

I'm with Seth. Affleck has done some great things in his career, but I'm not seeing him as Batman/Bruce Wayne; the top 3 guys I'm thinking are Guy Pearce (think Lockout), Rufus Sewell (think A Knight's Tale), or Karl Urban (think RED).
