‘Sex and the City 2’ a World Cup Beater at Overseas Box Office

‘Sex’ wins the international box office as the world zones out on soccer

What’s a soccer widow to do? Go see “Sex and the City 2.”
That’s how it went at the overseas box office this weekend, the first to run squarely into World Cup competition.
Though “Sex 2” disappointed in the U.S. and fell off sharply after its opening weekend, the Warner Bros./New Line film took in $23.7 million from about 7,900 screens in 56 foreign territories. It now stands at $130 million from offshore markets – about half of what the original made overseas.
Disney holdover “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” took the second position, showing solid staying power in its fourth week with $19.7 million on more than 10,000 screens in 50 territories.
“The A-Team,” meanwhile, struggled in the face of World Cup competition for its male-dominated target, grabbing the No. 3 spot on the offshore circuit with $15 million.
Ranking No. 4 on the weekend was Lionsgate’s “Killers,” which also seemed to benefit as a soccer counterprogramming alternative with a decent $8.7 million.
Universal’s “Robin Hood” came in fifth in its fifth weekend with $7 million, raising its overseas total to $183.3 million.
Sony’s "The Karate Kid" premiered to $6 million on a limited number of screens in Asia and the Caribbean, but is steering clear of the World Cup in most of Europe.
