The Weinstein Co. has started small with “Sing Street,” opening to $69,000 this weekend in only five theaters. It’s a modest showing for the John Carney film, still trying to gain traction before it expands next weekend onto 27 screens.

Some glimmers of hope worth noting: “Sing Street” enjoyed a 51 percent increase in ticket sales from Friday into Saturday. And with a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, TWC’s plan is to keep nurturing the title as it platforms in the top 10 markets in the coming weeks.

By comparison, the buzzy A24 thriller “Green Room” garnered $91,000 from just three theaters over the weekend in New York and Los Angeles.

Starring Anton Yeltsin, Imogen Poots, and Patrick Stewart as a tyrannical nightclub-owning villain, the scary movie from Jeremy Saulnier has a strong 89 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. The studio expects word of mouth will prime its wide expansion on April 29.
