Sony Classics Gets U.S. Rights to ‘Barney’s Version’

Adaptation of prize-winning novel stars Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up all U.S. rights to “Barney’s Version,” the studio announced on Wednesday.

The adaptation of Mordecai Richler's comic novel, packs some pretty impressive talent including Dustin Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Rosamund Pike and Minnie Driver. The film chronicles three decades in the life and failed love affairs of a hard drinking television producer (Giamatti).

The film has screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival and will be featured as a Gala Presentation at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and Sony did not give a release date for the film. In a statement announcing the deal Producer Robert Lantos said he had approached the indie studio about distributing the film several years ago before production even began.
