Spike Picks Up ‘Expendables’ TV Rights

Viacom cable channel licenses Stallone-directed, Lionsgate-distributed action film following its impressive $35 million domestic debut

Spike TV has picked up the rights to Sylvester Stallone action-homage "The Expendables," following the film's impressive $35 million domestic debut.

Spike will premiere the movie in April 2013.

North American distributor Lionsgate didn’t announce terms. Generally speaking, however, cable acquisitions of feature films are based on 10-12 percent of domestic gross.

This is the second recent Spike pick-up of a Lionsgate-distributed title, with the cable channel acquiring “Kick Ass” several months ago.

Written, directed and starring Stallone, “Expendables’” ensemble cast also includes Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, David Zayas, Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke.

Produced by Avi Lerner’s Millennium Films/NuImage for $82 million, Lionsgate acquired North American distribution rights to “The Expendables” for $20 million.
