Stephen Colbert says he’s thrilled for new Miss America Nina Davuluri — and doesn’t understand how people on Twitter could deride her as “a terrorist.”
Davuluri is the first American of Indian descent to win the crown. But some on Twitter believed her to be Muslim, and new “Today” correspondent Carson Daly noted that 705 tweets referenced both “Miss America” and “terrorist.”
“That’s right. Seven hundred and five people saw a woman in a bikini and thought: Muslim Extremist,” Colbert said.
Then he broke character for a few seconds to laugh.
Colbert was pleased to see that Miss South Carolina Brooke Mosteller represented his home state “admirably,” showing a clip of her saying, “20 percent of our homes are mobile, because that’s how we roll!”
Colbert’s spin was that owners of those homes could leave South Carolina any time they want — “and yet they choose to stay.”
