StudioCanal Lands Select European Rights to ‘RoboCop’ Remake

MGM film stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Joel Kinnaman

StudioCanal has acquired distribution rights to "RoboCop" in the U.K., France and Germany, the company said Tuesday.

StudioCanal will release the film theatrically and across video, video on demand and television in those territories. It gets rights to the film for 20 years.

The reboot of the science-fiction action film stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Joel Kinnaman of AMC's "The Killing.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is producing the film along with Sony and José Padilha ("Elite Squad") is set to direct.

For those unfamiliar with Paul Verhoeven's original film, "RoboCop" is set in the not-too-distant future when  multinational conglomerate OmniCorp looms large at the center of robot technology. After a cop is injured in the line of duty, the company employs robotics to save his life, creating a mechanically enhanced law enforcement badass.

The film is currently in pre-production and slated for a summer 2013 release.
