Sundance 2013: Oscilloscope Buys ‘Mother of George’

Andrew Dosunmu's second feature follows a woman who struggles to conceive a child

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American distribution rights to “Mother of George,” Andrew Dosunmu’s film about a couple’s struggles to conceive a child.

The film premiered Jan. 18 at Sundance, prompting the New York Times’ Manohla Dargis to laud it as “visually splendid” and Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman as “dazzingly shot.”

Dosunmu’s film stars Danai Gurira as Adenike and Isaach De Bankole as Ayodele, the owner of a Nigerian restaurant in Brooklyn.

As their nuptials approach, Adenike struggles to conceive a child and must decide whether to permit her fiancé to have his child with another woman.

“It is exactly the kind of gem which we love to champion,” Oscilloscope’s David Laub and Dan Berger said in a statement. “In only his second feature, Dosumnu shows not only tremendous style and visual flair, but a deep empathy for his characters and the ability to portray the complexity of a traditional culture adapting to the modern world.”

Darci Picoult wrote the film, which Parts & Labor’s Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy produced along with Matt Parker, Carly Hugo, Picoult, Chris Maybacj, Saemi Kim and Tony Okungbowa.
