Susan Sarandon may have worn a nun's habit in "Dead Man Walking," but she's no fan of Pope Benedict XVI.
Appearing alongside actor Bob Balaban at the Bay Street Theater in Long Island, the Oscar-winning actress branded the head of the Catholic Church a "Nazi," Newsday reports.
Sarandon used the choice phrase Saturday while discussing the anti-death penalty message of the film and the book on which it was based, and mentioned that she sent the non-fiction book to Pope John Paul II, an opponent of executions.

"The last one," she said, "not this Nazi one we have now."
Presumably, Sarandon was referring to Benedict's controversial membership in the Hitler Youth as a child in 1940s Bavaria. He has maintained that he was forcibly conscripted.
From Hank Williams Jr.'s use of "Hitler" to describe President Barack Obama to Lars von Triers remark that he was a "Nazi" during a Cannes press conference, use of Third Reich inspired metaphors have landed celebrities in hot water.
If history is any guide, it's time to cue Sarandon's public apology.
