TCA: Michael J. Fox – ‘We All Get Our Own Parkinson’s’

Michael J. Fox says it's okay to mine laughs from his illness

The star of NBC's upcoming "The Michael J. Fox Show" says there's nothing wrong with drawing laughs from his struggle with Parkinson's disease — because everyone is dealing with something.

"We all get our own Parkinson's," the actor said at the Television Critics Association press tour in on Saturday.

Asked if he vetted the comedy with other people with Parkinson's, Fox answered: "No, I didn't. I don't vet creative instinct, I just go with it."

"The reality of Parkinson's [is] that sometimes it's frustrating and sometimes it's funny. I need to look at it that way," Fox continued. "I think we all get our own bag of hammers. We all get our own Parkinson's. We all get our own thing."

He added: "If someone want to be outraged, they can be outraged, but I don't think it's outrageous."

Fox also addressed the topic of radio host Rush Limbaugh, who famously accused Fox of playing up his Parkinson's symptoms to promote stem-cell research. Asked what he would say to Limbaugh given the opportunity, Fox said, "I'm not a grudge person… I'd probably ask him about his golf game."
