TCA: Showtime’s David Nevins – ‘I Want Our Producers to Take Risks’

Nevins gives "Homeland" a mandate to not be boring

Showtime president David Nevins says he doesn't have any objections to the upcoming twists coming to "Homeland."

"I want our producers to take risks," he said at a Television Critics Association panel on Tuesday. "It's not about resetting back at the beginning at the end of every episode. The enemy of good television is boredom and predictability."

Nevins spoke after making a series of announcements about his network. He revealed castings for the upcoming "Penny Dreadful," said a "Dexter" spinoff could happen, and said a new documentary series, "Time of Death," will premiere in the fall. The series from Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves will follow terminally ill patients in their final days.

He also announced that "Episodes" will premire with "Shameless" and "House of Lies" on Jan. 12, and that "Californication" will return in April, along with "Nurse Jackie."

Nevins also invited reporters to try out Showtime Anytime, which allows subscribers, beginning today, to watch Showtime's live East and West Coast feeds from their computers and wireless devices.

And he talked about fans of "The Borgias" who are lobbying him to bring back the cancelled series. They hired a plane Tuesday to fly over the Beverly Hilton, where the panel took place, to deliver their message via skywriting.

Nevins said he only saw one "Borgias" protester as he arrived, and asked him what he thought of the finale. The protester hadn't seen it, Nevins said, leading him to believe he was a demonstrator-for-hire.
