Showtime is developing a limited series based on the life of President Theodore Roosevelt, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

The project is in the early stages of development. “American History X” screenwriter David McKenna will write the series in addition to serving as executive producer.

The series comes from Electus and Authentic Talent and Literary Management. Electus’ Ben Silverman and Sean Canino will produce along with Authentic’s Jon Rubinstein and Jason Egenberg.

The 26th President of the United States was previously played by Tom Berenger in the 1997 made for TV movie “Rough Riders,” which detailed Roosevelt’s role in the Spanish-American War. Robin Williams also played Roosevelt in the “Night at the Museum” franchise.

The series joins the list of other Showtime original offerings, including “Homeland,” “Masters of Sex,” “Ray Donovan,” and “The Affair.”

Roosevelt is remembered often as a larger than life character who embodied the American ideal of masculinity. He became President in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. He was re-elected in 1904 in a landslide victory.
