‘Thor’ Hammers in $3.25M in Midnight Showings

Latest entry in Marvel’s superhero universe on pace to make nearly $70 million in its opening

"Thor," Marvel's latest entry in its cinematic superhero universe, hammered in  $3.25 million in Thursday midnight showings, according to studio estimates.

The well-reviewed comic book adaptation is on pace to open to roughly $70 million for the weekend in 1,800 locations.

That's slightly less thunderous than the $3.7 million "Fast Five" brought in its midnight screenings last week at 1,104 locations. The cars-and-crooks blockbuster ultimately brought in an explosive $86.2 million in its opening frame.

It's also less than the monster $7.5 million "Iron Man 2" brought in during its midnight showings last year — but that Robert Downey Jr. led sequel screened in 2,500 locations.

"Thor" stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins and has received an 81 percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
