‘Thor’ Star Chris Hemsworth in the Hunt for ‘Snow White’

Actor would play opposite Kristen Stewart in the Universal “Snow White” project

After two false starts, Universal may have found its Huntsman: Chris Hemsworth.

The "Thor" star is in negotiations to play the role in Universal's upcoming "Snow White and the Huntsman," TheWrap has confirmed.

Viggo Mortensen and Hugh Jackman had been in talks with the studio, but negotiations with both fizzled.

If things work out this time around, the 27-year-old Australian actor will play opposite Kristen Stewart, who has the role of Snow White. The Huntsman is a character in the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale. In that story, the Huntsman is sent by the wicked queen to kill Snow White. But instead, he protects and mentors her.

Charlize Theron will play the evil queen. Sam Claflin is in talks to play the prince.

Universal acquired Evan Daugherty's spec script for the movie after a heated bidding war in 2010. It was reportedly one of the biggest spec deals of the year. Rupert Sanders is directing.

The movie has a release date of Dec. 21, 2012.

It is one of two competing "Snow White" stories. Relativity Media's untitled Snow White project stars Armie Hammer, Julia Roberts and Lily Collins. It is directed by Tarsem Singh.
