Bloomberg LP announced Tuesday a surprise choice for editor-in-chief of its newly-acquired BusinessWeek magazine: Josh Tyrangiel.
Tyrangiel, currently the deputy managing editor of Time magazine and head of its website, will replace Stephen Adler, who announced his exit plan last month. Tyrangiel will report to BusinessWeek chairman Norm Pearlstine, the former editor Time and editor-in-chief of Time Inc. (Pearlstine, who joined Bloomberg as chief content officer in 2008, is being advised by Jim Kelly, former editor of Time and former boss of Tyrangiel’s).
As the New York Times points out, Tyrangiel doesn’t have much experience as a business journalist – before being promoted to the top editor slot at Time.com in 2006, Tyrangiel was an up-and-coming music critic.
In October, Bloomberg emerged with the winning to buy BusinessWeek from McGraw-Hill for less than $5 million in cash plus assumption of heavy debt. The deal is expected to close before the end of the year.
