‘Titanic’ Getting 3D Re-Release

Blockbuster will return to theaters in time for the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking

"Titanic" will sail into theaters again.

The James Cameron blockbuster will likely be re-released in April 2012, which would coincide with the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking, according to an individual with knowledge of the plans.

There's a catch. In light of Cameron's other billion-dollar blockbuster "Avatar," the director will re-release his 1997 romance in 3D. Just as they did when the film was originally released, Paramount would handle domestic distribution and Fox would get the international markets.

In revisiting his Oscar-winning film, Cameron is overcoming his previously stated reservations about retrofitting films to make them three dimensional. Unlike "Alice in Wonderland" and "Clash of the Titans,"  "Avatar" was filmed in 3D.

News of "Titanic"s' 3D re-release was first reported by the "Los Angeles Times."
