Tituss Burgess on What Separates Him From His ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ Alter-Ego: ‘I’m a Nice Person’ (Video)

Third season of Netflix sitcom debuts Friday

Tituss Burgess will reprise his character, Titus Andromedon, in the third season of Netflix’s “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” on Friday. Ahead of its release, Burgess wants to clear something up: There are some clear differences between him and his on-screen alter-ego.

“Titus Andromedon hovers at about a hundred at all times — I just don’t have that kind of energy,” Burgess told TheWrap. “And I’m much more of a chill presence and he’s very eccentric, very outspoken. I guess I’m outspoken too, but I’m a good editor and I have a little bit more tact than perhaps Titus does. And I’m a nice person — I’m not so sure Titus is nice all the time!”

“The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” star stopped by TheWrap Studios to tease more shenanigans for his sassy character on the third season of the Tina Fey-produced series.

“We were so happy he finally got a job, but he had just gotten into a relationship, […] the cruise comes up and Mikey [Titus’ love interest] tells Titus at the end of season 2 that he should go,” Burgess said when asked about what we can expect in the upcoming season. “So Titus goes on his cruise and it doesn’t go well — of course it doesn’t go well — he can never seem to get anything right. And he leaves prematurely and sort of washes ashore, we don’t know what happened or how… you’ll find out.”

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” centers on Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), who escapes from a bunker where she was held for 15 years by Reverend Richard (Jon Hamm).  When she moves to New York, she soon realizes that a lot has changed since she was little. The show portrays themes of inclusion and plays heavy on staying true to yourself — and according to Burgess, it also offers up hope.

“The show has such a dark premise, but it manages to offer up such infectious hope and that’s what I love it about it so much,” he added. “It is so hopeful even in the most trying of circumstances. Kimmy is sort of the center of all of that, of all the characters, she’s had perhaps the most jarring past and yet she is unrelenting and full of inspiration, full of hope.”

The show, created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, also stars Carol Kane and Jane Krakowski.
