Former “Today” anchors Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley are reuniting for a guest-hosting stint alongside Matt Lauer on the NBC morning news program on Monday, the network announced on Thursday.

Gumbel and Pauley anchored the show together for seven years from 1982 to 1989, the year Pauley left, while Gumbel moved on after 15 years in 1997.

The pair previously reunited on the show with several other former anchors when “Today” celebrated its 60th anniversary in January 2012.

Pauley continues to appear on the show monthly for her “Life Reimagined TODAY” segment, in which she spotlights Americans over 50 embarking on new careers, while Gumbel hosts HBO's “Real Sports.”

The promos are using the phrase “favorite anchors” in hyping this “reunion”. Nonsense! The only one of the bunch who deserves to be called a favorite is Pauley as she is and was what an anchor should be, a legitimate journalist. Comparing what Bryant Gumble or Matt Lauer have contributed to Today to what Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley brought to the show is like comparing a Walter Cronkite or this generation's Brian Williams to the part of Today hosted by Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford. Brokaw and Pauley were the legitimate anchors and the good part of Today for years. When NBC chose to try to convince everyone that Gumble was a journalistic equivalent that was just wrong. No matter how many heads of state or foreign newsmakers Gumble interviewed it didn't in my mind make him Pauley's equal any more than Lauer's interviews give him the credibility of Ann Curry or Savannah Guthrie. Some figures, like Bob Costas, can competently and skillfully handle duties in several genres. Bryant Gumble and Matt Lauer are not and have not been those kind of figures and for NBC to promote this “reunion” as a “favorite anchors” thing is not a true statement of the way things are for many who have been fans of the Today show.

Bryant Gumbel is just TERRIBLE!!! He is obnoxious, rude, and so arrogant!!! I cannot for the life of me figure out why the Today Show would bring him back on TV when they are dropping in the ratings and no longer the #1 show. Putting Gumbel in the anchor chair will surely drop them further in the ratings!!! He spoke in front of Jane Pauley all morning!! I had to turn it off b/c I couldn't take his pompous attitude!! Bad move Today Show!!! I cannot imagine why they promoted it as “favorite anchors.” I cannot imagine the Gumbel is anyone's favorite!! He is just terrible and Matt Lauer runs a very close second behind Gumbel!!!
