‘Today’ Beats ‘GMA’ by Most Viewers Since London Olympics

NBC’s morning show trumps its ABC competition by a thin margin

Last week, NBC’s “Today” show beat competitor “Good Morning America” by its largest gap since the London Summer Olympics.

The reported gap, per Nielsen fast nationals provided by NBC, has the former show topping the latter during Week 1 of the Sochi Games by 4 percent in total viewers; a daily average of 211,000 more audience members than “GMA” reeled in.

The total eyeball count also gave “Today” its largest audience since April 25, 2011 — one of the days leading up to the British Royal Wedding.

In the morning shows’ key demo, adults 25-54, the “Today” show topped “GMA” last week by 185,000 viewers per day, an 8 percent advantage.

While the stats represent good news for “Today” — which regularly loses the morning war — the gap is significantly thinner than it was this same week during 2010’s Winter Games in Vancouver. During Week 1 of that competition, “Today” topped “GMA” by an average of more than 1.8 million total viewers daily, ABC shared with TheWrap.

During Vancouver, that demo gap was wider than one million viewers daily, on average. The numbers — both overall and in the demo — represent the smallest advantages “Today” has had over “GMA” for an Olympic week ever, ABC said, citing numbers that date back to 1991.

The week leading up to the Sochi Games, “GMA” topped “Today” by a daily average of 642,000 total viewers, 191,000 in the demo.
