Tom Cruise Admits Katie Holmes Divorced Him to Protect Suri From Scientology

During a deposition for the actor's $50 million libel lawsuit against Bauer Publishing, the actor asserts: “There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion.”

Tom Cruise admitted in a court deposition that one of the reasons Katie Holmes gave for leaving him was to protect daughter Suri from the Church of Scientology.

The actor was deposed on Sept. 9 in United States District Court as an obligation for his $50 million libel lawsuit versus Bauer Publishing Company, who published a story that said Cruise “abandoned” his daughter. While Cruise said there was a period of time where he didn't see Suri much, he took great exception to the concept of abandonment. He was also offended by the idea that his daughter would need protection from her father's religion.

“Do you believe it to be false that Ms. Holmes left you in part to protect Suri from Scientology?” Bauer's attorney asked Cruise, in an effort to disprove the publisher's assertion was false.

Cruise answered, ”Listen, I find that question offensive. I find it — those statements offensive. And like with any relationship, there are many different levels to it. You know, I — I find it very offensive. There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion.”

The attorney repeated the question, asking if Cruise believes the published contention to be false. ”I believe it is a false statement,” Cruise responded.

Bauer's attorney clarified what required answering: “And Ms. Holmes has never indicated in any way that that was one of the reasons that she left you?” adding, “To protect Suri from Scientology?”

Cruise responded, “Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes.”

The actor said later in the deposition that Suri is no longer practicing Scientology.

The attorney didn't ask if you found the question offensive, Thomas. He asked if it was a false statement. That's the problem with cults; they get all hurt even with the most innocent of questions. Tom is 0 for 3 in the marriage department but he still doesn't get that his “religion” is dumber than a box of hair.

    Dear Tom Cruise,

I don't respect your religion and I don't care if you are offended.

Scientology sucks and doesn't make sense when you approach it logically, but then again, you can say that for most religions. I find it ironic when I see die-hard Christians attacking Cruise because of his religion. I don't think the whole souls-being-tossed-into-volcanoes thing is really that much more unbelievable than Moses parting an ocean and walking across it, a dude being alive in a whale's belly for days on end, or the Son of Christ rising from the dead. You know, religion as a whole is widely nonsensical. People believe some wacky shit, and Scientology is no doubt wacky. But who are we to judge a celebrity's worth as an actor based on his private life? There's pretty good evidence against Kirk Douglas that he raped Natalie Wood, but I don't hold it against his wonderful performances. Cruise is a movie star, not the best of actors but certainly one of the all-time best superstars and he knows precisely what kind of projects to choose based on his talents. He's also known for being extremely nice to fans, which is more than can be said for 99% of other celebrities. He's great, and I'm glad I don't feel compelled to judge someone's professional work based on whether or not they believe in bullshit religions, because I'd probably dismiss most people then.

The actor said Suri is no longer ”practicing” Scientology
    yeah
because she is obviously old enough to understand what religion is
    and what a cult is

Suri will someday be an adult and will be able to make her own decisions. All children should be shielded from any religion until the reach the age of reason.
