Tom Hanks, who received SAG and Golden Globe nominations last week for his title role in the piracy drama “Captain Phillips,” has been named recipient of the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Chairman’s Award, PSIFF organizers announced on Monday.
Hanks also co-stars as Walt Disney in “Saving Mr. Banks,” a supporting role for which he was suprisingly bypassed by Globes and SAG voters. He will receive the Palm Springs award for both films.
The Chairman’s Award will be presented to Hanks at the festival’s Awards Gala, an annual fundraising event that is also used by studios to showcase awards contenders in front of an audience in the desert resort 100 miles east of Los Angeles. The award has previously gone to Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Richard Gere, Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman.
Other awards recipients at the Jan. 4 gala will include Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Bruce Dern, Matthew McConaughey, Steve McQueen and the cast of “American Hustle.”
Last week, the festival announced that it would present the Breakthrough Performance Award award to Lupita Nyong’o, the co-star of “12 Years a Slave,” and the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing to “Saving Mr. Banks” composer Thomas Newman.
