Tom Hanks Works His Magic as Walt Disney in First ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ Trailer (Video)

The biopic, written by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith, profiles Disney's 20-year quest to turn P.L. Travers' 1934 children's book, "Mary Poppins," into a movie

The first trailer for "Saving Mr. Banks" shows Tom Hanks doing his best to charm the author behind "Mary Poppins" while charming viewers as well.

In a first for Hollywood, the Academy Award-winning actor portrays movie icon Walt Disney in the upcoming film based on the true story of his struggle to convince P.L. Travers to allow Disney to adapt her children's book for the big screen.

Fellow Oscar-winner Emma Thompson plays Travers, a prickly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But as we all know, she learns to lighten up a little.

What appears to be the most fascinating component of the untold story is just how Disney convinces her to do so, and what he must learn to understand about the writer, her childhood, as well as her fictional creation — who may not have been as fictional as we all thought.

Colin Farrell, Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, Bradley Whitford, Annie Rose Buckley, Ruth Wilson, B.J. Novak, Rachel Griffiths and Kathy Baker co-star in the Dec. 20 wide release directed by John Lee Hancock.
