Tom Hanks and the play in which he stars, Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy," were among Tueaday's Tony nominees, but stars including Bette Midler, Scarlett Johansson, and Alec Baldwin were snubbed. "Kinky Boots," written by Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein, led with 13 nominations, including for Best Musical.
"Matilda" followed with 12 nominations, as well as Tony Honors for excellence for the four young actresses who play the lead character. The most nominated play was the revival of "Golden Boy" with eight nods, followed by "Lucky Guy" and "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike," which each had six.

Though "Orphans," starrring Baldwin, was nominated for Best Revival of a Play, he was not. Tony voters seemed generally unawed by many of the film and TV stars who have graced Broadway stages this year, also passing over Al Pacino, Jessica Chastain, Katie Holmes and Jim Parsons.
But they did nominate Nathan Lane and David Hyde Pierce in the lead actor category, alongside Hanks. They also nominated Laurie Metcalf, Holland Taylor, Cicely Tyson and Tony Shalhoub.

Hanks was nominated for his role as tabloid columnist Mike McAlary in "Lucky Guy," Ephron's last play. The role allowed him to once again read the lines of the "Sleepless in Seattle" screenwriter.
In another notable snub, the Tonys passed over "Motown: The Musical" in the musical category, but did recognize it in four other categories. Valisia LeKae was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, and Charl Brown was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical.
