Toronto Deals: Cinedigm Nabs Horror Film ‘Come Out and Play’

Film centers on a vacationing couple whose visit to a mysterious island takes a bloody turn

Cinedigm Entertainment Group has picked up U.S. distribution rights to "Come Out and Play."

Cinedigm plans to release the horror film theatrically in early 2013, the company said Friday from the Toronto Film Festival.

CinedigmThe film centers on a vacationing couple who are preparing for the birth of a child, Beth. Their holiday takes a turn for the bloody after they take an excursion to a  beautiful but mysterious island populated entirely by children.

Directed by the single-named Makinov, the film is a remake of the 1970s horror movie "Who Can Kill A Child?" It stars Vinessa Shaw and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Even in a business with it's fair share of eccentrics, the Belarus-born Makinov is an odd cat. According to Cinedigm, he wears a mask while working on a project to disguise his identity. He claims that allows the film to stand on its own, apart from what he believes is an ego-driven, director-centric approach to filmmaking.

Since former Overture Films chief Chris McGurk took over the leadership reins at Cinedigm over a year ago, the company has been trying to transition from a digital media company to a full-service studio. To that end, it purchased home entertainment distributor New Video Group in April in a deal worth as much as $20 million. It has been actively looking for projects to pick up at Toronto.

The filmmakers were represented in the negotiation by Cinetic Media and  Cinedigm was represented by Vincent Scordino, the company's vice president of theatrical acquisitions.
