A tourist was stabbed Wednesday at Los Angeles’ famous Hollywood and Highland shopping and entertainment center, close to the Oscars venue.

The male victim was standing on the sidewalk at around 1:10 p.m. PT when “suddenly, for no reason,” a man approached and began stabbing him with a large kitchen knife, LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The suspect was arrested by two off-duty New York Police Department officers who witnessed the attack, and then pulled out their weapons to subdue the assailant. He was taken into custody for booking.

The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition, Smith said. While his identity also has not been released, police confirmed he was a tourist visiting L.A.

As for the NYPD heroes, they were visiting California “on official business,” according to the LAPD.

“We are extremely happy and grateful that these detectives were not only there but took heroic action to catch this perpetrator and take him into custody,” Smith said. “They likely saved the life of the man who was stabbed.”

The Hollywood & Highland structure houses the Dolby Theatre, where the Academy Awards are held.
