‘Toy Story 3’ Plays With $44.8M Overseas

Mexico leads strong weekend overseas, where Disney will roll out ‘Toy Story 3’ slowly

Though “Toy Story 3” is only playing in about a quarter of the foreign marketplace, it handily won the weekend overseas with $44.8 million, and Mexico led the way.

Mexico peso’ed up $14.3 million for the third installment of the franchise that gave rise to Disney/Pixar, while huge debuts in China and Latin America contributed. Like it did with “Up” and other Pixar films, Disney is gradually rolling out “Toy Story 3,” looking for the best possible moment in each market.

“The A-Team” gave 20th Century Fox a second-place finish, taking #13.95 million from 4,911 screens in 48 territories. The action update of the 1980 TV series was No. 1 in France, where it earned $3 million.

“Sex and the City 2” fell to No. 3 after two weeks atop the foreign chart, though it still managed $13 million in 7,000 situations in 58 markets. The Warner Bros./New Line sequel has earned $157.2 million at the foreign box office.

“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” took a solid $10.2 million in its fifth weekend, mere gravy on the foreign circuit that’s already brought the Disney film $213.1 million.

DreamWorks’ Animation’s “Shrek Forever After” was fifth, with $10 million from 2,107 screens in 20 territories.
