‘Toy Story 3’ Plays Nice With Other Countries

Latin American territories boost Pixar’s threequel over $100 million in foreign markets

“Toy Story 3” plays nice with foreign markets — twice!

The Pixar 3D sequel grossed $36.1 million on 6,278 screens in 32 offshore markets this weekend, putting it over the $100 million foreign threshold In just two weeks – both at No. 1.

Added to domestic totals, “Toy Story 3” has thus far earned $326.6 million, and is poised to pass the total worldwide gross of the original “Toy Story” — $361.9 million — sometime next week.

And the film hasn’t even hit half of its worldwide rollout yet.

Extreme popularity in Latin American countries has largely fueled the phenomenon, according to Disney. More than $62 million has come from those countries, with Mexico responsible for 34 million.

Fox’s “Knight and Day,” labeled a loser in the U.S. for earning “just” $20 million, was No. 2 in the foreign marketplace with $12.6 million from a modest 2,238 venues in 12 territories, including some where it was No. 1.

Sony’s “The Karate Kid” was third, taking $8.4 million from 925 locations in 26 territories. It’s staying out of the way of the World Cup in European markets, where it will play later this summer.

“The A-Team” was fourth with $7.7 million on 4,344 screens in 53 territories; it’s now at $47.2 million overseas.

And rounding out the top five was “Sex and the City 2,” which has now earned $172 million on the foreign circuit – well short of its predecessor’s more than $260 million offshore total.

“Grown Ups,” which debuted at No. 2 domestically with $41 million, opened only in Australia, where it was No. 2 with $2.3 million.
