Imagine how hard it would've been to get into Hall H on Thursday morning if everyone had known they were not only going to see footage, but be in the movie.
"Tron: Legacy" director Joe Kosinski, via "bouncing-ball" words on the giant screens, led the throng gathered here through a series of shouts and stomps — DISK WARS!!! DISK WARS!!! — to be used in as sound for the sequel 27 years in the making.
The entire "Tron" contingency was here to take it in: Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Garret Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Michael Sheen, thrilling the audience with eight minutes of footage in 3D and a look at the new trailer (video embedded below).
Not much news was coming from the panel, but a few tidbits about the movie came to light:
1. Bridges plays two characters: Flynn, the programmer, and Clue, his avatar (whose age hasn'tchanged; he's Jeff Bridges at age 35, via digital effects). "It was pretty wild. Pretty psychadelic," Bridges quipped.
2. They wouldn't have done the movie without Bridges and Boxleitner. "We had to have Flynn, and and we had to have Tron," Kosinski said.
3. The suits were actually illuminated — those glowing lights weren't added after-the-fact. Hedlund:
"It's kind of the wardrobe of a lifetime, I mean … where do you go from here? Jeans and a T-shirt will never be the same."
4. Olivia Wilde got a taste of what it was like to be Ginger Rogers, first learning all of her stunts in regular shoes … "But we had to do all the kicks and flips in four-inch heels."
