Ratings: NBC Tops State of the Union Night With 'Biggest Loser'

Weight-loss competition wins despite tying a season low

President Obama's State of the Union Address was covered uniformly by the big broadcasters on Tuesday night, so the night's winner was the one with the best lead-in to the speech. It turned out to be NBC, which won on the relative strength of “The Biggest Loser.”

Despite tying a season low 1.7 rating, the reality competition was the highest-rated show of the evening.

NBC was first in ratings with a 1.5 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 5.9 million, according to preliminary numbers. ”The Biggest Loser” at 8 earned a 1.7/5 and 6.6 million viewers. The NBC News Special: State of the Union Address at 9 received a 1.4/4 and 5.6 million viewers.

CBS and Univision tied for second in ratings, each with a 1.3/3. CBS was first in viewers with 8.2 million, and Univision was fourth with 3.2 million.

For CBS, following a rerun, the CBS News Special: State of the Union Address earned a 1.3/3 and 7.4 million viewers. The special ran into a rerun at 10:30.

Fox and the CW tied for fourth in ratings, each with a 1.1/3. Fox was fifth in viewers with 3.1 million, the CW was sixth with 2.5 million.

For Fox, “Dads” at 8 got a 1.5/4 and 3.9 million viewers. Following a rerun, the Fox News Special: State of the Union Address had a 1.0/3 and 2.9 million viewers.

For the CW, “The Originals” at 8 earned a 1.0/3 and 2.3 million viewers. “Supernatural” at 9 received a 1.2/3 and 2.8 million viewers — its most viewers since October 2010.

ABC was sixth in ratings with a 1.0/3 and third in total viewers with 4.3 million. Following a rerun, the ABC News Special State of the Union Address got a 1.1/3 and 4.9 million viewers. It overran into a repeat at 10:30.

Telemundo was seventh in ratings with a 0.6/2 and in total viewers with 1.5 million.
