Richard Heene, better known as Balloon Boy's dad, began an extended staycation at Larimer County Detention Center in Colorado on Monday morning.
Heene, who pleaded guilty last November to perpetrating an elaborate hoax that his 6-year old son Falcon was trapped in an airborne helium balloon, was sentenced to a 90 day jail sentence.
Heene must spend 30 days in jail before he is eligible to serve the remaining 60 days of his sentence in the jail's work release program, a spokeswoman for the Larimer County Sheriff's Office confirmed to TheWrap.
Heene turned himself in at 8:30 on Monday morning, 30 minutes before he was required to arrive at the prison.
Recently, Heene has backed away from his confession that the high altitude chase was a ruse designed to attract attention and enthusiasm for a potential reality TV show, saying that he only pleaded guilty so his wife Mayumi wouldn't be deported to Japan and that she misunderstood the meaning of the word "hoax."
