Harry Smith has been tapped as a correspondent for NBC's upcoming primetime newsmagazine, NBC News president Steve Capus said on Monday. Smith will officially come on board July 18.

The new primetime, hour-long newsmagazine will be headed up by "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams.

In announcing the hire, Capus said that Smith's "vast experience, covering everything from interviews with world leaders to wars and natural disasters, makes him a perfect fit for this new broadcast."

News broke last week that Smith was leaving CBS to come aboard at NBC, six months after CBS announced that it was replacing him on "Early Show."
