Actor says he and his partner proposed five years ago
Nail Patrick Harris hopes to marry his longtime partner, David Burtka, thanks to New York making same-sex marriages legal on Friday.
"I'd sure love to get married," Harris tweeted Friday before legislators passed the measure and Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed it into law. "Please, NY Senate, vote in favor of marriage equality today. My family would really appreciate it."'
The "How I Met Your Mother Star" later wrote: "It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!"
He added: "David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date."'
Harris and Burtka became the the parents of fraternal twins through a surrogate last year.
New York is the sixth and most populated state to pass marriage equality. Same-sex marriages can begin taking place in 30 days.
Harris was one of countless celebrities who took to Twitter to celebrate the news.
