Norah O'Donnell is CBS News' new chief White House correspondent, the network announced on Thursday. Most recently, O'Donnell had served as the chief Washington correspondent for MSNBC, and a contributing correspondent for "Today" and "Weekend Today." O'Donnell had been with NBC for 12 years.
O'Donnell will replace current CBS News White House correspondent Chip Reid, who will become a national correspondent.
In her new position, O'Donnell will also serve as the principal substitute anchor for Sunday morning public-affairs show "Face the Nation," hosted by Bob Schieffer, and will report for all of CBS News' programs, including "60 Minutes."
Touting O'Donnell's "experience on Washington's top beats," CBS News president David Rhodes predicted that the network's news department "will be even more competitive in our reporting with Norah on board."
O'Donnell -- who received an Emmy award for her part in NBC News' 2008 election-night coverage -- called the appointment to CBS News "a once in a lifetime opportunity."
O'Donnell comes to CBS News at a time of upheaval for the department, with Scott Pelley replacing the departed Katie Couric as the anchor for CBS Evening News earlier this month.
