"Oprah is a plus-size woman," noted fitness guru Rush Limbaugh observes
Rush Limbaugh has cracked the case of why Oprah Winfrey wasn't allowed to purchase a ridiculously pricey handbag in Switzerland. Sort of.
The outspoken radio host on Tuesday offered an alternate theory about why a Zurich sales clerk rebuffed Winfrey when she tried to check out a $38,000 handbag at a boutique.
While Winfrey intimated that the clerk might have told her that she couldn't afford the purse due to racial bias, Limbaugh suggested another possibility: That Winfrey was turned away because she's "fat."
"Oprah is a plus-size woman, and there is discrimination against plus-size women. You don't see a whole lot of really fashionable, wealthy, overweight women. Most fashionably wealthy women are stick-thin," Limbaugh informed his audience, as reported by Media Matters. "Unless you get into the frumpy '70s and '80s, but even then it's an exception, to see a very wealthy, overweight, fat woman."
Limbaugh went on to suggest that Winfrey "could have suffered a double whammy when it comes to discrimination."
Since Winfrey revealed the handbag incident to Larry King last week, she has received an apology from Switzerland's tourism office. Winfrey offered her own apology Monday night at the Los Angeles premiere of "Lee Daniels' The Butler."
"I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland. I'm really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I'm sorry that I said it was Switzerland," Winfrey said.
The store clerk told Swiss newspaper SonntagsBlick that Winfrey's account is mistaken, saying that it's "absolutely not true" and "absurd" that she's racially biased.
"I'm Italian," the clerk, identified as "Adriana N," said. "Why should I discriminate against someone because of their origin? That makes no sense!"
