When Seth Meyers got to "Saturday Night Live" in 2001, he quickly bonded with writer Michael Shoemaker over comics.
"One of the first things we did together was walk down to Midtown Comics because we had a shared love of that. Also, 'SNL' was the first time in my life I had enough money to buy all the comic books I wanted," Meyers said in a Television Critics Association panel Wednesday.
"Seth was the first friend I knew who actually liked comics," added Shoemaker. "I liked comics, but it was a solitary experience."
Meyers is now preparing to leave "SNL" to take over "Late Night," and Shoemaker executive-produces "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon." But the two found time to indulge their comic-book love with the new Hulu animated series "The Awesomes," debuting Thursday.
The series follows an "Avengers"-like team in the awkward days after its veterans move on.
But Shoemaker and Meyers said seasons in transition can be great.
"It's certainly a rebuilding period," Meyers said. "It's a really exciting time to be at the show."
"That time when a bunch of people leave, it's thrilling because we know the new people and we're just introducing them to you," said Shoemaker.

Meyers said he plans to stay at "SNL" right up until the switch to "Late Night" in February.
"I'll stay at the desk until they give me a new desk," he said.
Meyers is working on "The Awesomes" while not only closing out "SNL" and finding writers for "Late Night," but also while planning his wedding.
He joked that he had to tell his wife-to-be, "I'd love to do a cake tasting, but I have to go to Comic-Con."
Meyers and Shoemaker enlisted lots of "SNL" friends to voice "The Awesomes." They include Hader, Taran Killam, Kenan Thompson, and former writer Emily Spivey. "Mad TV" veteran Bobby Lee voices a child sumo.
Would Shoemaker and Meyers be open to a comic-book adaptation of their comic-book parody?
"We would not fight that," Meyers beamed.
