Ben Whishaw has landed the lead role in "True Blood" creator Alan Ball's next project for HBO, the network has confirmed.

Whishaw will star as Webster Goodhue in the pilot for "All Signs of Death," based on Charlie Huston's 2009 novel "The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death," about a former schoolteacher who becomes immersed in a shady, dangerous world after becoming a "crime scene cleaner" who helps dispose of evidence for a local gangster.

The actor began his career on the British theater scene before breaking into films like "Layer Cake," "Brideshead Revisited" and the upcoming Julie Taymor adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest."

"All Signs of Death" is the most recent HBO project from Ball, who created two of the network's biggest shows -- "True Blood," currently HBO's highest-rated show, and "Six Feet Under."

HBO greenlit the "All Signs of Death" pilot earlier this month.

News of Whishaw's casting was first reported by Deadline.com.
